Who’s the instructor?
Tim Farrell has worked as a film colourist in Sydney and Mumbai and graded millions of feet of 35mm film. Tim’s been a DaVinci user since 1995 and running Resolve courses since 2010.
While working at Frame, Set & Match in Sydney I was responsible for all the 35mm and VistaVision film transfers and preliminary colour grading on both The Matrix sequels.
While working in India I graded hundreds of TVCs for international brands like like Pepsi, Sony, Colgate, LG, Orange, Revlon, Chevrolet, Revlon and Tata Indicom.

What’s the structure?
You operate the Resolve Micro Panel and I provide guidance and feedback. We’ll work through the tutorials in the Color Correction Handbook. Of course, we can also experiment with your own footage.
You can think of grading in a similar way to playing the piano. Just because you own a piano, doesn’t mean you know how to play it. And you wouldn’t want to learn the piano amongst a group of 30 people. Or even worse, in an online class of 200 people. In that case, you might as well flush your money down the toilet. Only intense individual tuition can set you on the path to becoming a maestro.
What will I learn?
The five basic tenets of colour grading:
- Greyscale
- Video Scopes
- Reference Stills
- Depth
- Contrast – Tonal and Colour
Learn how to break an image down into lift, gamma and gain. Learn the importance of the parade, vectorscope and waveform. I’ll demonstrate how the image gallery is a vital grading tool. You’ll also learn about the impact of colour and contrast on image depth and how to maximise it to create images that leap off the screen!
One option is to spend the first day learning some fundamentals and the second day grading one of your projects. As it’s one-on-one training we can focus on your specific objectives and work at a pace you’re comfortable with.
Topics can include:
- Primary grading
- Secondary grading
- Power Windows and tracking
- Dynamics and keyframing
- Shot matching
- Creative techniques
- Raw and Log footage

- Hidden interface tools
- Colour management methods

Do I need any experience?
